For the first time since Mao's economic reforms, firms were allowed to compete. TVEs could sell their goods at any price they could get, opening up competition and creating goods that consumers wanted. TVEs had low wages and low overhead (management) costs, so they were highly competitive.

Essay
Some poems that come to mind may be Terrace in the Snow and Sent to My Two Little Children in the East of Lu. The speaker in Su Tung Po's poem recounts the scene on a very cold, winter day. He mentions things like the warped tiles, the snow piling like salt, and the crows circling over head. The imagery conveys a sense of danger and isolation. Li Po's Sent to My Children contains plenty of imagery, from the green mulberry leaves, the tall peach tree, to the river. The hyperbole and metaphor employed to describe the spring scenery could show that the speaker's strong desires to return home. The settings of these two poems contrast greatly in imagery and meaning.
