Answers to 10-13 Questions

Language and Literature
Wang Xiaoni's Half of Me is Aching revolves around the two opposite sides of her body as she examines the "psyche, the complexity of personality and the physical and psychological aspects of pain." The right side seems healthier than the left, and the right can be seen as the superior, more attractive side, while the left has more "sinister connotations." Contrasting images and actions run throughout the poem.

Social Science
Zhao Ziyang replaced Hu Yaobang when Hu died. Then when Zhao fell out of favor because he was seen as not conservative enough, Li Peng became the most likely person to replace him, but successes in suppressing the riots in Shanghai promoted Jiang Zemin to Zhao's vacated position.

Music
Hsi-p'i and erh-huang are "prototypes" of melodies in Peking opera generally characterized by the melodies and rhythms of the accompanying percussion section. Erh-huang melodies are generally used for serious and lyrical texts. The fiddle is tuned lower in erh-huang melodies, emphasizing the G and C scales. Erh-huang is often faster and has a denser rhythm, as it is meant for male singing voices. The hsi-p'i, on the other hand, is made for females and goes slower. Hsi-p'i melodies are usually used for brighter moments in the opera, and they emphasize the E and A tuning scales.

Super Quiz
James Hansen describes the paradoxical finding that anthropogenic gases have heated the earth's surface by about two watts per square meter but that seemingly miniscule amount has led to enormous effects on our planet. "Small forces, maintained long enough, can cause large climate change."

Economics
China's financial sector is far from where it needs to be to become a major international power. Many of the banks are still state-owned, and they have "weak accounting systems and poor oversight." Often banks are strongly influenced by politics rather than commercial health. In addition, they are poor at assessing the riskiness of loans: the government has had to intervene and buy the bad loans so the banks could still remain in operation. China is working on improving its financial sector, however, as required for WTO membership.

Math
There are 11 letters in the set {TALLAHASSEE} and the letters A, L, S, and E repeat. The question essentially asks for how many different scramblings of all these letters can be made. So what you do is take the factorial of the total number of letters, divided by the factorials of how many times each letter appears. (Since letters T and H each appear once in the set, 1! is 1 and will not be written here.)
11! / (3! * 2! * 2! *2!) = 831600

Essay
The Good Earth was published in 1931 in the wake of the Great Depression. Many of the hardships of Wang Lung's family could have been quite relevant to the circumstances faced by the Westerners affected by major economic strife and famine, and the wealth the family attains could have been especially attractive in the novel. Also, for many, this was a rare look into the lives of those in the East. Buck's writing style is simple, direct, and very detailed. Buck offered a unique view of the East, since she was a Westerner who had been immersed in the Chinese culture since childhood. Plus, the story has universal themes.

Language and Lit
Pai Hua is the Chinese vernacular, as supported by Hu Shih.

Social Science
Lin Biao wrote the foreword to Mao's Little Red Book. He rose to power through his control of the People's Liberation Army, and was considered Mao's successor for a time. But when Mao felt Lin was gaining too much power over the PLA, he switched around the relative ranks to make Zhou Enlai his successor rather than Lin Biao. Allegedly Lin schemed a plot to assassinate Mao. In September 1971, Lin mysteriously died in a plane crash.

"Go to the West" -- Shanxi
"Meeting in Menggu Tents" - Qinghai

Art
Earthenware, Stoneware, and Porcelain are all times of ceramics, or pottery. Earthenware is fired at low temperatures, while stoneware is fired at high temperatures. Stoneware also can use a glaze made of feldspar to make it non-porous and glossy. Porcelain is made of a fine white clay called "kaolin." It is fired at even higher temperatures that stoneware. Glazes were usually applied before the final firing.

Super Quiz
Eskers - sediment left by melting glaciers in ridges and beneath glaciers
Thermokarst - pitted terrain formed when ice contained at shallow levels melts and the ground collapses
Rock Glacier - distinctive sloping surfaces found in Alaska and Antarctica; created when many many cycles of freezing and melting cause the top layer of water-soaked ground to creep slowly downhill
Chaotic Terrain - regions of fractured, jumbled rocks that collapsed after a sudden groundwater surge
Channeled Scablands - regions found in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington) that formed after a dam holding back a glacier broke open and caused a huge flood

Economics
Township and Village Enterprises (TVEs) were rural industrial firms that emerged in the first round of economic reform under Deng Xiaoping. They produced goods for local use. For the first time since Mao's economic reforms, firms were allowed to compete. TVEs could sell their goods at any price they could get, opening up competition and creating goods that consumers wanted. TVEs had low wages and low overhead (management) costs, so they were highly competitive.

Math
f(x) = 3x^2 -6x +9

given
f(2) = 3(2)^2 -6(2) +9 = 9

find y
f'(x) = 6x - 6

take the derivative of f(x)
f'(2) = 6(2) - 6 = 6

plug in x=2; f'(2) is slope of the tangent line
y-9 = 6(x-2)

plug y, the slope, x into the point-slope formula

Speech
Remember that the prompt asked for only one thing you would change. So one basic approach is the choose one and give three reasons as to why this change is imperative. It is good to have a solution to the problem as well, probably in the conclusion. Remember to end with strength and confidence.

Interview
Be truthful and open. Talk about someone you know personally. (This question is different from "who is your role model?".) Be positive. The person should have had a positive impact on you.

Essay
Some poems that come to mind may be Terrace in the Snow and Sent to My Two Little Children in the East of Lu. The speaker in Su Tung Po's poem recounts the scene on a very cold, winter day. He mentions things like the warped tiles, the snow piling like salt, and the crows circling over head. The imagery conveys a sense of danger and isolation. Li Po's Sent to My Children contains plenty of imagery, from the green mulberry leaves, the tall peach tree, to the river. The hyperbole and metaphor employed to describe the spring scenery could show that the speaker's strong desires to return home. The settings of these two poems contrast greatly in imagery and meaning.
